phancy.com rating:
phancy.com notes: These are always hit and miss, but this year's is pretty decent. The wraparound short is funny and gross, and benefits from being doled out in pieces between the other shorts. A couple of the shorts are the usual POV journey through a crazy situation, with lots of screaming. They're not bad, but I'm glad they're shorts. The gem of the lot is the Spanish possession story that makes clever use of camera work and editing to actually build up a great sense of dread. My other favorite is the deliberately self-conscious weirdfest by the director of the Adult Swim Yule Log movies. It features a candy bowl that gets revenge on people taking more than once piece of candy. It has a delightfully amateur "We're putting on a play!" feel to it. Finally, trigger warning: One of the shorts is about a child killer and is generally unpleasant to watch.

"V/H/S/HALLOWEEN" is one of the best entries in this now-annual anthology series because it feels the most tonally consistent (and has maybe the best batting average). Not only are most of the stories tied together with themes of Halloween, like urban legends, bowls of candy, and haunted houses, but they mostly have the same tone: a tongue-in-bloody-cheek sense of humor and willingness to go beyond perceived decorum. Keep your elevated horror. Let's get down in the muck. I heard that's where they have the full-size candy bars.
